Changing States is the first of two special Spotlight Exhibitions at BlackShed this September, celebrating and showcasing the work of artists living and working locally.
Presented in partnership with Robertsbridge Arts Partnership, these weekend exhibitions create an opportunity to bring locally based artists into the gallery and introduce their work to a wider audience.
We begin with Karen Kyriakoudis and Changing States on 5 & 6 September, followed by Sue Farrant and Simon Green on 12 & 13 September.
About the artist
Karen Kyriakoudis is a New Zealand artist currently residing in Robertsbridge. Combining portraiture with elements of figurative expressionism, her practice utilises acrylic paint alongside mixed media materials, including collage, charcoal and pencil.
Drawing deeply from her former background as a Narrative Therapist, Kyriakoudis explores how we imagine the lives of strangers while navigating her own inquiries into neurodivergence. Her portraits serve as a visual investigation into ‘social masking’, the exhausting daily performance of conformity often associated with late-diagnosed or unrecognised neurodivergence, particularly in women.
Kyriakoudis’s physical process is a direct metaphor for this psychological concealment and exposure.
By centering her work primarily on female subjects, Kyriakoudis explores the often hidden experiences of women who have navigated unrecognised neurodivergence, bringing these experiences into greater visibility.
