Thursday 29th August 2024 – transport included
On 29th August our tour group visited the beautiful home of a fascinating couple: Lee Miller – photographer, Vogue model and WWII correspondent; and Roland Penrose – English surrealist painter and co-founder of the ICA.
We had a very interesting guided tour of the house which is filled with art works including pieces by Picasso who was a visitor on several occasions. We saw the kitchen in which Lee Miller cooked some interesting meals and which features a tile over the Aga created by Picasso. As well as the dining and living rooms we visited Lee Miller’s study with photos and her photography equipment on display.
The gardens contain sculptures collected by Roland Penrose, who curated and mentored artists over the years.
In the gallery was a special exhibition featuring Lee Miller’s wartime photography alongside recreations of these as filmed for the new feature film starring Kate Winslet as Lee Miller, which opened in cinemas on 13th September. A RAP on Tour trip to see the film at the Kino in St Leonards was enjoyed by all, a moving and well made film about Lee Miller’s wartime photography.
We were chauffeured in a Battle bus (provided by BACT – Battle and Community Transport, a local charitable service) with Simon Rivers as our driver. A great day out!
